Licenciado en Literatura Inglesa y Bellas Artes, empezó a ilustrar historias de ciencia-ficción durante su adolescencia para la revista australiana Aurealis. Desde el 1996 ha escrito y publicado libros ilustrados para niños y adultos conocidos internacionalmente, sus libros han sido traducido al francés, al alemán, al chino, al coreano y ahora al español.
